I N D E X of V E R S E S by J. R. R. T O L K I E N Version 1.10 Last revised: Mar 25th 1995 By: Lars M. Garshol About the index: ================== This index originates in a paper index I once made for myself, and which I made into this electronic version after someone asked for a poem index on alt.fan.tolkien. I then mailed it to Bill Loos, and on his advice I improved and expanded it a great deal. (Thanks, Bill!) Your suggestions, corrections and comments are eagerly received by e-mail at larsga@ifi.uio.no. If there is anything you think should be added to this index, or changed in it, I'd be very glad to hear your suggestions. The most recent version of this index will be available at the URL http://www.stud.ifi.uio.no/~larsga/download/tolkpoem.txt, or if you cannot find it there, through e-mail to larsga@ifi.uio.no. How to use this index: ======================= The index itself is divided into two parts: one where poems are indexed under title, and one where they are indexed under first line. The titles are sorted in the usual English fashion, which means that 'A Drinking Song' is indexed as 'Drinking Song, A' and 'The Wight's Chant' as 'Wight's Chant, The.' As this index is electronic, there are faster ways to find for example 'The Wight's Chant' than to scroll through the index until you find W in the Title section. A better way is to use a text search on 'Wight', which will lead you straight to the point in the index you want much faster than scrolling. It is also especially useful if you only remember that the title contains the word 'Chant,' but can't remember the exact form of the rest of the title. Indexing principles: ===================== Generally verses are indexed under title only when a title is given, or one is sufficiently obvious. All verses are indexed under first line, with some very few exceptions. For songs/poems from the Lord of the Rings, I have used the titles given in the index. It seems that the titles in the indexes to the Ballantine and HarperCollins editions of the LotR differ somewhat, so where a poem is indexed under different titles in the two editions, I've indexed it here under both. When several poems have the same title, or one appears several times, I have added explanations to show which poems are which and in what context they appear. These notes are generally of the form: 1: Sung by xxx at yyy. 2: ... Here 1: is the first reference, 2: the second, and so on in the order the references are listed in the index.
