Ælfred is designed to be small and fast, especially intended for use in Java applets (it uses only two .class files). It has a non-standard interface. Ælfred reads the DTD, but does not validate the document.
Note that an enhanced version is available in the GNU project's GNU JAXP package and there is also one in SAXON.
The original Ælfred was written by David Megginson at Microstar and widely used, but has since disappeared with Microstar. The above three projects are all that remain.
